With the current workload necessitating increased field services, Otter Creek Engineering (OCE) took the opportunity to bring on additional interns this summer! The interns provided valuable assistance on multiple OCE projects, all while gaining field experience and working alongside seasoned professionals.

The interns spent much of their time on the following projects:

  • Vermont Green Schools Initiative – OCE had previously provided engineering feasibility analyses and stormwater designs to bring Vermont schools into conformance with the State’s new 3-acre stormwater rule. Interns provided on-site construction review and administrative support for the stormwater improvement projects.
  • Lead Line Service Inventory, Phase II – OCE was one of two firms selected in Vermont for this phase of the nationwide Lead Line Service Inventory. Interns assisted with water sampling, reporting, document research, plan review, and public outreach for nearly a dozen water systems across Vermont.
  • Construction Review Services – Vermont squeezes its construction projects into a relatively short construction season, so interns had the opportunity to provide additional construction review on culvert and road reconstruction projects throughout Addison County.
  • Design and Bid-Phase Services – Interns learned about Owner, Engineer, and Contractor relationships through reviewing plans, editing contractual documents, and working on recordkeeping and quantity estimating.

Reilly Koitzsch had this to say on completing his internship this year: “I think the many different aspects of the work I did—researching water systems, canvassing/talking to homeowners, taking plumbing measurements, building sampling kits—exposed me to a variety of topics in civil/environmental engineering, helping me figure out what type of work I’d like to do in the future. I really appreciate how the whole OCE team valued the work of all the interns and often offered encouraging feedback. Thank you for your insightful guidance, constant support, and flexibility over the course of three very busy months!”

OCE offers annual paid internships that provide hands-on field and office experience, mentorship from professional engineers, and opportunities for bonuses and long-term employment.
